Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Dolly Parton -
9 to 5 on 9/25
September 25 seems like the perfect day to celebrate Dolly Parton. The date - 9/25 - is a fitting nod to her famous song and film "9 to 5," and this year Dolly is being celebrated in a number of special ways.
Nashville is marking September 25 as Dolly Day, while here in Ohio the date has been proclaimed Dolly Parton Day in recognition of her remarkable life, career and contributions to children's literacy. The Dollywood Foundation is also celebrating Give Like Dolly Day, encouraging people to continue Dolly's tradition of generosity and support for children through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.
For more than six decades, Dolly's music, unmistakable personality and colorful style made her one of the most recognizable figures in American entertainment. Her connection to Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry became an important part of that story, while songs including "Jolene," "I Will Always Love You," "Coat of Many Colors" and "9 to 5" became classics.
Celebrating Dolly Through Art
As an artist, I've always found Dolly to be a fascinating subject. Her expressive personality, iconic appearance and connection to country music have inspired me to portray her in a variety of artistic styles.
My Dolly Parton collection includes pencil and charcoal portraits, watercolor-inspired artwork, color portraits and vintage-inspired Grand Ole Opry travel posters. The three pieces featured here bring together several of those interpretations in celebration of Dolly and the extraordinary legacy she created.
So, when the calendar reads 9/25, there really is only one appropriate way to say it:
